The Man in the Closed Room
It is a black comedy with elements of social drama and absurdity. The protagonist, Zhanna, returns to her provincial hometown after her father's death. Along with her neighbor, Kostik, she must deliver the body to the morgue for examination. But everything unfolds into a series of absurd and grim events: funeral services are closed, locals are eager to profit from death, and officials and doctors are heartless and corrupt. Meanwhile, Zhanna constantly "hears" the voice of her deceased father, who sometimes argues with her, sometimes comments on what's happening. Through these voices, their complex, traumatic family history is revealed, full of resentment, unlived love, and rudeness. Along the way, the characters encounter everyday poverty, the absurdity of provincial life, the mocking reality of death, and their own demons. At the center of the play is the daughter's conflict with the memory of her father and with herself, as well as with the environment where even death becomes a farce.
